Learning objectives

Getting to know the origin, types and physical-chemical characteristics of waste water. Mastering the basic knowledge of waste water treatment technology.

Learning outcomes

The acquired knowledge enables the student to independently carry out analytical tests of waste water samples and, based on water quality indicators, to make proposals for treatment procedures, i.e. to propose a waste water purification scheme.

Course contents

Theoretical classes:
Definition of waste water, origin, division and characteristics of waste water. Emission of harmful substances into surface waters (nutrients, heavy metals, oil and its derivatives, PCB, PAS, PAH, pesticides...). Waste water quality indicators and pollution criteria. Goals and aspects of wastewater treatment (legal framework, ecological and techno-economic aspects).
Pollution criteria and a proposal for a purification scheme. Control parameters of the wastewater treatment process. Wastewater treatment processes: mechanical, chemical and biological treatment procedures. Treatment and disposal of sludge from the wastewater treatment process. Final treatment of waste water: removal of nitrogen and phosphorus.
Practical lesson:
Sampling and types of water samples. Preservation of samples. Determination of physical and chemical indicators of water quality (pH, BOD, COD, total dry matter with fractions, turbidity...). Simulation of the wastewater treatment process (Jar tests, ion exchange, adsorption...)
