Learning objectives

Understanding the effects of various types of pollution on the environment and human health. Application of prevention measures in environmental protection. Air and water quality control measures. Acquaintance with the basic processes of waste water, waste gas and solid waste treatment. Acquaintance with the current legislation in this area.

Learning outcomes

Students acquire basic knowledge about the impact and consequences of emissions in all environmental media and become familiar with the approach and protection measures. Also, students are able to choose and apply the appropriate "end of pipe" technology to reduce the emission of pollutants.

Course contents

Biosphere and ecosystem; Polluters and pollutants; Emission, transmission, immission; Principles of sustainable development; Renewable and permanent sources of energy; Sources, types and distribution of air pollutants; Global atmospheric phenomena (acid rain, greenhouse effect, destruction of the ozone layer...); Methods for controlling air emissions; Waste water - origin, division and characteristics; Wastewater treatment and process selection: mechanical, chemical and biological processes; Solid waste - management hierarchy; Municipal, industrial and medical waste. Collection, transport and waste disposal methods; Communal noise; International and national regulations in environmental protection.
Practical teaching:
Laboratory exercises: determination of non-specific and specific quality indicators in surface and waste water; Jar tests; Technical analysis of solid waste. Field exercises: visits to institutes and specialized laboratories; visit to wastewater treatment facilities; visit to the landfill.
